- An outside roll (often called an outside turn) in West Coast Swing is a rotational pattern where the follower turns outward, away from the leader's connected hand, typically executed over a 6-count basic rhythm (1-2, 3-and-4, 5-and-6). Counts 1–2: Walk forward or step back to create a slight prep, initiating momentum and directing the follower down the slot.Counts 3&4: Raise the connected hand slightly to signal the outside turn, guiding the follower to step across and begin turning outward on the upbeat.Counts 5&6: Lower the hand, redirect the energy, and complete an anchor step to finish the pattern.
